A few months ago I did a Mana’o Radio show called The Greatest Instrumentals of All Time. On her show following me, Kathy Collins played a brilliant contrasting set of songs with no instruments—all A Cappella. That made me think about yet another way of contrasting instrumental songs. How about a group of songs that tell stories? This Storytellers playlist gave me an opportunity to play songs by some of the great storytellers as The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Harry Chapin, Bruce Springsteen, Warren Zevon, John Prine and many, many more. Some songs are blatantly patriotic while others were performed in protest of the American government; some relate to the Founding Fathers' beliefs while others simply celebrate our American way of life. I hope every song on this 4th of July playlist helps you enjoy your holiday barbecues, picnics, or other get-togethers...because what could remind us of our America more than taking a day or two off work, eating and drinking with friends and family, and blasting some good ol' rock and roll out of your windows?

A few weeks ago I spent several hours browsing through Indie Surf Rock bands from around the world on a website called Reverb Nation at www.reverbnation.com. My Surf Rock band SoundWave has our own Reverb Nation page here so I wanted to see how many other Surf Rock bands there were and what kinds of songs they did. I must have listened to songs by dozens and dozens of bands. I selected 14 of the ones I thought were particularly good and represented a varied mixture of Surf Rock styles (yes, there is more than one). The resulting play list included bands from the UK, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Italy, Brazil, Canada and all over the USA including SoundWave!

I did it! I managed to stay awake til midnight last night. It wasn't as difficult as I'd thought it would be. I did feel tired for about the last 15 minutes or so mixing up my words a bit but other than that I did just fine. It was a great feeling to shut down the station for the night, reading the official FTC sign-off notice, putting the broadcast on auto-pilot, powering down the CD bays, turning off the lights, and leaving the building.

The Runnin' with the Devil playlist was a big hit. I got lots of good phone calls. I ended the set at midnight with a kick-ass live version of The Rolling Stones doing Midnight Rambler!

I grew up in the Los Angeles area in the 1960’s when rock radio was exciting and dynamic. At that time rock was a culture not a product...and comedy was freshly absurd. One radio station in particular, KPPC 106.7 FM, was a Pasadena, California radio station best known during the period 1967–1971 (I was 15-19 years old then!), when it was one of the leading "underground" radio stations in the United States, presenting a freeform mixture of experimental and historical music with countercultural ideas. In contrast to the dominant Top 40 format at the time, each KPPC DJ selected his/her own music, which would veer between genres, including rock and roll, folk music, blues and comedy.

Well I guess this just had to happen. Mana'o Radio's iron man Bill Best decided that he would like to have Christmas Day off. Bill and his wife Bobbie and I have been playing music together once a week for years now. It was Bill together with Barry (Dr. B) Sultanoff who encouraged me to begin doing shows on my own.

So I will be sitting in for Bill Best on Mana'o Radio (91.5 FM or on the web at www.manaoradio.com) on Christmas Day from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. I will be playing (what else?) Christmas music, which I happen to love. Over many years I used to buy a CD or two of Christmas music each year so I now have quite a collection that I will want to dip in to. You'll hear familiar Christmas standards as well as songs you have probably not heard before; everyone from Willie Nelson to Willie K, from Elvis Presley to Frank Sinatra, and from the Boston Pops Orchestra to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Hour 1 – Robert Plant and Alison Krauss live from the CMT-TV show Crossroads

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss won the Album of the Year for their album Raising Sand at the 2009 Grammy Awards. Earlier this year the Crossroads TV program on the CMT channel broadcast a live concert of Robert and Alison performing several songs from Raising Sands. On CMT Crossroads, Plant and Krauss combine his rock intensity with her angelic grace. The two music icons perform songs from the new album with special guest, T-Bone Burnett, acclaimed songwriter, performer and Raising Sand producer, joining in the collaboration.

Hour 2 – The Bobby Fuller Four from a newly released CD of live performances from the early 1960’s

Previously unreleased live recordings by The Bobby Fuller Four best known for the hit song I Fought The Law. In the early 1960’s when The Bobby Fuller Four played in clubs and bars they were expected to perform covers of songs by other artists in addition to their own material. So in addition to their own hits this recording includes the band performing songs by Chuck Berry, The Beatles, Buddy Holly, and others. At a time when the British Invasion and folk rock were the dominant genres in rock, Fuller stuck to Buddy Holly's style of classic rock and roll with Tex-Mex flourishes. His recordings reveal the influence of Eddie Cochran, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, and the Everly Brothers. Less well known was Fuller's ability to emulate the reverb-laden surf guitar sounds of Dick Dale and the Ventures.

Hour 3 – The Rolling Stones from the website Wolfgang’s Vault

The Rolling Stones live at Foret Nationale in Brussels, Belgium in 1969. I had a LOT of fun playing my Dancing Tunes set last night! It really was a diverse set of tunes with Rock, Rap, Reggae, Soul, Surf, Country. All very upbeat stuff. Can't wait for my next opportunity to be on the air!!

I enjoyed coming on the air right after Dr. B this time. Dr. B got me started on Mana'o Radio about 2-1/2 years ago when I began coming on his show for an hour once a month playing tunes I had found from somewhere interesting on the Internet--he was the one who gave me the nickname Web Wizard Mike.

Well I learned an important lesson this afternoon. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS test each CD I burn BEFORE taking it in to the station to play. I actually have always done this prior to each show, except for today. And of course one of the three Fab Four Soul CDs didn't work. It contained the first 15 songs of the show--1/3 of my material gone before I even began.

So I had to scramble. I had to begin with a song from one of the other two CDs. I had to play the 2/3 of the Fab Four Soul material I had on the other two CDs that (thank GOD) did work. And while the Fab Four Soul songs were playing I had to scrounge around the studio to determine what I could play for 1/2-hour or so at the end. I also decided to fill some time by making a few additional Public Service Announcements. It all worked out OK in the end. And I don't think anyone was any the wiser that this format wasn't exactly as I had planned.

So I filled my unplanned extra half-hour with some great Hawaiian music from Hapa and Barefoot Natives.

I got my idea for the theme for this California Dreamin' show while I was watching a Dodgers' game on TV last week. The Dodgers won the game with a 3-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. The fans went crazy, they played Randy Newman's I Love LA on the PA, and I immediately thought--that's a Mana'o Radio theme! I truly enjoyed listening to each and every song I played today. I received many encouraging phone calls about the show and offering suggestions of songs to play. Many of the callers were also ex-Californians like myself.

I also had a chance to play several songs from one of my all-time favorite artists and songwriters--Dave Alvin who is from Downey, CA where I grew up. Great stuff!

Pay particular attention to song number 4 Ipo Lei Manu in the playlist below. This song was written by Hawaiian Queen Kapi'olani and recounts a special historical event when her husband King David Kalakaua departed for San Francisco where he died, never having heard this haunting love song. I'm feeling much more comfortable as I continue to host these Mana'o Radio shows. It's sort of like learning to scuba dive. When you first learn to dive you are VERY self-concious underwater. You're focused on whether or not you're doing things correctly rather than simply enjoying the experience. This is how I've felt the first few broadcasts but now that I've done a few I'm not as worried about what I'm doing, I'm just in the groove. I feel much more confident.

The show today was VERY unique. My "By The Numbers" playlist was a great joy to play. Being that today was July 31 I played 31 songs with numbers in the title in sequence from 1 through 31. From there I went on to play many other number-oriented songs until I reached the end of the show. Great stuff!

Did you know that The Righteous Brothers' Unchained Melody and Rod Stewart’s Maggie May were originally released as “B” sides? Sometimes both “A” and “B” sides of a 45 RPM record were both big hits, but sometimes the “B” side was the bigger hit and the “A” side was forgotten. I spent an hour on Mana’o Radio this morning on Dr. B's show playing a selection of “Killer B’s”, all songs by well known artists that were originally released as afterthoughts but most became big hits. I told him I was bringing Killer B-s into his beehive. :)

They were throwaways, afterthoughts and also-rans -- songs the original artists relegated to B-sides. Looking back, they make a pretty killer A-list from a half century of rock and pop.

1. I’m Free – The Rolling Stones 1965: Introduced as the flip side to 'Get Off of My Cloud,' this typically Stones-y declaration of independence has since taken on quite the afterlife, having been revived in a massive U.K. version by the Soup Dragons and, more recently, a U.S. credit card commercial.

2. Murder By Numbers – The Police 1983: This noir-ish non-album B-side was smuggled into quite a few homes on the back of a little ditty called 'Every Breath You Take.' The diabolical Sting imagines reaching "the top of your profession" -- as a killer. Deservedly appended to the tail end of cassette (and later CD) editions of 'Synchronicity.'

3. Pink Cadillac – Bruce Springsteen 1984: Nosed off the 'Born in the USA' album by 'I'm Going Down,' this stomping ode to -- what else? -- a muscle car was the B-side to 'Dancing in the Dark.' Four years later Natalie Cole had a huge hit with her version.Springsteen's original eventually came out on the outtakes box 'Tracks.'

4. The Sweetest Thing – U2 1987: Written as an apology from Bono for forgetting his wife's birthday, this song was itself an afterthought. Issued as the flip side of U2's 'Where the Streets Have No Name' single, it was such an unexpected fan favorite that the band remade it for its 1998 best-of compilation. Promotional 'Sweetest Thing' candy bars are now collectors' items.

5. Be Bop A Lula – Gene Vincent 1956: Capitol's answer to a new RCA property named Elvis, this tough-guy rocker scored his breakout hit on his very first single -- with the B-side. The A-side, 'Woman Love,' was deemed too suggestive for radio play, but DJs flipped for the flip. So familiar-sounding that when Gladys Presley first heard it, she called her son to congratulate him.

6. Hey Hey What Can I Do – Led Zeppelin 1990: Famously protective of the integrity of their albums, the hard-rock pioneers released a scant amount of music outside their official LPs. This rarity, the B-side of the 'Immigrant Song' single, was later tacked onto the post-breakup grab bag 'Coda' when that album was reissued on CD for the 'Complete Studio Recordings' box.

7. Rain – The Beatles 1966: Arguably the song that set off the Fab Four's psychedelic deluge, this mind-warping droner -- the first song to feature backward vocals -- was the B-side to 'Paperback Writer.' It didn't appear on an album until the 1970 catch-all LP 'Hey Jude.'

8. Don’t Worry Baby – The Beach Boys 1964: Brian Wilson's melancholy masterpiece was not unlike almost every other early Beach Boys song in that it was written about a car. What was, however, different was that the song skipped the fun and frivolity in favor of a heartbreaking vulnerability that would come to define Brian's work. B-side to 'I Get Around,' the group's first No. 1 single.

9. Unchained Melody – The Righteous Brothers 1965: Producer Phil Spector saw 'Hung on You' as the song that might re-create the chart success of 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'.' But it was the backing side, a melodramatic cover of the well-traveled 'Unchained Melody,' that became the duo's follow-up smash. Oddly, at the time the song was revived years later in the movie 'Ghost,' the Brothers' version was available only on cassette.

10. I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor 1978: The disco era's definitive anthem of longevity was originally pegged with a short lifespan when Polydor relegated it to the B-side of the lead single from the album 'Love Tracks.' In hindsight, the A-side was aptly named: 'Substitute.'

11. Maggie May – Rod Stewart 1971: Selected as one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll," this oldies staple was originally expected to shape little more than the back side of 'Reason to Believe,' the lead single from Rod the Mod's breakthrough album, 'Every Picture Tells a Story.' When the B-side became the hit, the single was hastily repackaged.

12. I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry – Hank Williams 1949: The song that makes the most profound case for Hank Sr. as "the hillbilly Shakespeare," this prototypical country lament first appeared as the flip side to the decidedly less canonical 'My Bucket's Got a Hole in It.' A midnight train, a bird that's lost its will to live -- heck, even the moon ducks behind a cloud to cry. No, this yodeling poet wasn't long for this world.

Today's trivia question: What was the "B" side to the Rolling Stones mega-hit Satisfaction? Answer: The Under Assistant West Coast Promo Man.

I just got off the phone with Kathy Collins. I will be hosting another Mana’o Radio (KEAO-LP 91.5 FM) appearance this coming Friday, July 31 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM that I am really excited about!

This particular timeslot was originally occupied by the co-visionary and co-founder of Mana’o Radio, Barry Shannon. Barry passed away over a year ago and they have yet to permanently fill his timeslot, so various DJs are rotated through this postion on an ongoing basis. It’s sort of like retiring his jersey. I am VERY honored and privileged to be given the opportunity to occupy this particular time. As a result, I do what I can to be sure it is as special as possible.

So…with this in mind…

Your mission (should you choose to accept it) is to determine a list of songs…all representing numbers in sequence. In other words, you must find songs with names that begin with the word representing each number.

Etc.

For example, Two Of Us or Eight Days a Week. The first few numbers are easy, but what do can you find when you get to 26, 27, 28? Hmmm.

Last night's broadcast in Eric Molina's spot was great fun! I had songs all about trains...some rock, country, blues, folk, soul/R&B, Punk, Hawaiian and even a theme from a classic 60's TV show. I had brought in 56 songs which was a pared down list from an original 80 or so. I only got through about 40 though.
